Hair Fitting and Prim Adjustment

This tutorial is not what I'd hoped it would be for one major reason. I'd only ever taken maybe a half dozen pics in SL before I started this blog. I'd never even so much as tried to do machinima. I've discovered the hard way that I know absolutely nothing about this art form. So the image in my head of a really good tutorial with pics of the stretching and rotating and moving of prims with maybe a short video is just not working out. I'll be practicing however, and future tutorials will include good visuals. Not this one though (sorry).

The first hair you need to chose to modify should be copyable. You will more than likely make a mess of this first attempt, but don't be discouraged because all it takes is a bit of patience. Oh, and a pose stand. You need to be at 0, 90, 180, or 270 degrees and the pose stand just makes this easier. They can be found free almost everywhere. Off the top of my head, there is always a good one in the Snatch Freebie TV.

Ok, so you have the hair and the pose stand ready. First right click on the hair in your inventory and chose "copy" then paste it somewhere. I always make a seperate folder for the un-modified hair. Now wear the hair that you'll be working on, and get on your pose stand so you'll be still while you work.
Right click on your hair and chose edit from the pie menu. This opens up your tool menu. If your hair is too small or too large, you'll need to either stretch or shrink it a very little bit first, so click the box marked "stretch" at the top on the left. You should now see 8 little white boxes around your head. I always use the front/top/left and the back/top/right ones first and just barely touch them and move them up or down.
First attempt at stretching
If the first attempt doesn't work, keep at it untill your scalp isn't showing anywhere, but right at the point where it isn't showing.

Great! Now we'll have to adjust a few prims...

At the top of your tool menu, where you'd checked off "stretch", you'll see "position". Click on that box and the box below these that says "edit linked prims". If you touch a piece of hair now you'll see it individually highlighted. I have a couple of pieces in my way here that I have to move in order to reach the hair that's sticking out of my ear. Once I'm able to reach them, I just very gently pull them back away from my ear until it's all cleaned up. Then I put back the pieces that were in the way and....TA DAAA! All done.

Damn! O.O Was that as hard for you as it was for me? I need a beer.

Don't forget to make sure "use grid" is unchecked before shifting prims around :-)

LOL! I knew I'd forget some things. I'll probably edit this whole thing a few times before I'm happy with it. Nobody will ever mistake me for a teacher, that's for sure!
